Best Long Wine List in the World

The Royal Mail Hotel cellar, built over 40 years, is highly-regarded for its comprehensive showcase of wine regions, styles, and grape varieties. World of Fine Wine Magazine has once again recognised Royal Mail Hotel at their annual awards, announcing Wickens at Royal Mail Hotel worldwide winner ofBest Long Wine List at the virtual ceremony held on 1 November 2021.

The Best Long Wine List category assesses lists that feature more than 500 wines (at 75cl bottle-size). When reaching their decision, judges consider the criteria of breadth, depth, height, balance, selection, accuracy, originality, suitability, design, and value.

Royal Mail Hotel was also awarded the regional winner in an additional three categories of – Best Hotel Wine List (Australiasia) | Best Dessert and Fortified Selection (Australiasia) | Best Champagne and Sparkling Selection (Australiasia).

Introducing the presentation from London, Neil Beckett, Chairman of the World’s Best Wine Lists judging panel and editor of The World of Fine Wine, hoped the event would help raise spirits after another challenging year for the hospitality sector.

“In another year that has seen so many sad losses, it’s all the more inspiring and uplifting to see how many establishments of all kinds, all around the world, have managed to adapt and to survive, and whose wine offerings—representing so much accumulated experience, expertise, promise, pleasure, and value—should help them, and all of us, look forward to better times,” Beckett said.

These awards follow on from recent international accolades, including the ‘Grand Award’ in the Wine Spectator Restaurant Wine List Awards, for which it has been awarded since 2014.

Wickens at Royal Mail Hotel has long been regarded as a restaurant that every wine lover must visit. Guests are invited to select from the 99-page wine list or from one of three daily changing wine matches: a five-course French Collection wine match, offering a selection of French wines that showcases the breadth and depth of the Royal Mail Hotel wine cellar, the Australian wine match and the cellar wine match.

Royal Mail Hotel invites guests to discover the collection during their stay by joining a Wine Tutorial hosted in the wine cellar by their sommelier team. Or, for more serious wine collectors, an annual membership to the Royal Mail Club allows guests to attend exclusive wine events and even select wines from the reserve cellar to be delivered to their homes.
