Agatha’s Cantana, Vivaldi’s Gloria
Saturday 5th September at 3pm, Sterling Place, Dunkeld
Born with only one finger on her left hand, Agatha was given up to the Venetian orphanage known as the Ospedale della Pietà on the day of her birth in 1712. This orphanage, where Antonio Vivaldi taught, had become renowned throughout Europe for the excellent concerts presented by its choir and orchestra. Benefiting from the excellent music education program at the Pietà, Agatha grew up to become a singer, teacher, composer and finally, the Director of the institution. There’s plenty more to learn about Agatha from a documentary called Agatha’s Story, available on SBS On Demand. It tells the story of the discovery and reconstruction of a lost Cantana, culminating in the ACC’s Venice premiere.
